Getting to Locarno
By plane:
While there’s a regional airport located at nearby Lugano, the best way to travel to Locarno internationally is via Zürich Airport and taking the train from there.
Zürich Airport is the largest international airport in Switzerland and is easy to reach from pretty much anywhere in the world. The train station at Zürich Airport is conveniently located in the airport itself, right below the ticketing center and the ride takes less than 15 minutes.
By train:
The train ride from Zürich Airport to Locarno takes about 2.5 hours and will require a few platform changes. Switzerland has one of the best and most reliable train networks in the world, but remember to pack efficiently (and lightly) to ensure a hassle-free trip.
By car:
Locarno is easily accessible via the A2 freeway (Autobahn). Whether you’re coming from the north or the south, you’ll be headed towards Bellinzona, a major transit hub in the southern part of Switzerland, before following the signs towards Bellinzona.

Locarno is very small and compact, so the best way to get around Locarno is by foot. Most attractions are within walking distance.

The city also has an efficient public transportation system, including buses and trains, that can take you to nearby towns and attractions.

A nice way to get around on a leisurely schedule is by utilizing the ferry service, which takes you to just about all the destinations around the lake, while enjoying the beautiful views on Lake Maggiore.
By car:
Renting a car is a good option if you are wanting to go on day trips to nearby cities and explore other regions.

Old Town:
Super cute area with its narrow cobblestone streets and colorful buildings. It’s also where many of the town’s historic landmarks and attractions are.
Lakeside promenade:
If you’re wanting those views of the lake, this might be the area for you. It also offers easy access to the town’s waterfront restaurants and bars.
Additionally, there are plenty of accommodation options available in the town’s surrounding areas, such as the nearby village of Ascona.

Piazza Grande:
Large square in the heart of Locarno with charming cobblestone streets and pastel colored buildings, surrounded by shops and cafes. It also hosts a range of events throughout the year, including the famous Locarno Film Festival (held in August).
Via Cittadella:
A pedestrian street full of shops and restaurants located in Old Town. This is where you will find high-end fashion, unique souvenirs, and delicious local specialties!

Madonna del Sasso:
A stunning sanctuary perched on a hilltop overlooking the city.
Ride on the Centovalli Railway:
An incredible scenic train journey that takes you through breathtaking landscapes. It runs between the towns of Domodossola in Italy and Locarno, Switzerland. You can stop at any of the cute little villages along the route or stay on for the entire 2 hour ride.

Locarno and Ascona are literally right next to each other, sharing the river delta of river Maggia entering Lake Maggiore. They’re about a 30 min walk apart, so if you visit one, you should definitely check out the other!

Every summer, Locarno hosts the Locarno Film Festival which is one of the most prestigious film festivals in the world. If you happen to visit during that time, you can’t miss this wonderful event in the Piazza Grande.

Moon and Stars Festival in Locarno is a vibrant 10-day summer music spectacle, hosting global as well as local superstars in the Piazza Grande.

A contemporary art museum located in a beautiful 17th-century villa.
