Geneva is a beautiful city located in the French-speaking region (the ‘Romandie’) of Switzerland. One of its most popular attractions is the Jet d’Eau – a massive fountain that shoots water 140 meters into the air. There is a lot to do here, and it is an ideal destination for travelers seeking that cosmopolitan city experience, combining Swiss charm and international flair. Getting to Geneva

By plane:

Geneva Airport, aka Cointrin Airport, is the main airport serving the city and is located just 4 km (approx. 2.5 miles) from the city center. It is well-connected to major cities across Europe, as well as to some destinations in North Africa and the Middle East. Several major airlines, including Swiss International Airlines and easyJet, operate flights to and from Geneva Airport.

By train:

Geneva is also well-connected to other Swiss cities and European destinations via its train station, Gare de Cornavin. High-speed trains, such as the TGV Lyria, connect Geneva to cities such as Paris, Lyon, and Marseille in France, as well as to Milan and Venice in Italy.

Getting Around Geneva

Geneva has a comprehensive public transportation system, which makes getting around quite easy.

The city has buses, trams, trains, and boats, all of which are included in the same ticketing system. The Geneva Transport Card, available for free from most hotels, also allows you to use public transportation for free during your stay.

Taxis and ride-sharing services are also available, but can be quite expensive.

Additionally, Geneva is a very walkable city, with many of its attractions located within close proximity of each other.

Best Areas To Stay In Geneva

Old Town (Vieille Ville):

This charming neighborhood is known for its historic buildings, cobblestone streets, and medieval architecture. There is easy access to popular attractions such as the St. Pierre Cathedral, the Reformation Wall, and the Museum of Art and History.

Paquis:

Located near Lake Geneva, the Paquis neighborhood is popular among tourists for its stunning views and lively atmosphere. The area is known for its variety of restaurants, cafés, and nightlife options. There is also easy access to the central train station and the United Nations office.

Eaux-Vives:

Located on the southern shore of Lake Geneva, Eaux-Vives is a peaceful residential neighborhood with a variety of parks, gardens, and walking paths. It’s near popular attractions such as the Jet d’Eau fountain and the English Garden.

Plainpalais:

A vibrant neighborhood known for its lively street art scene, trendy bars and cafés, and the popular flea market held every weekend. It’s also home to the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and the Ethnography Museum.

HOT TIP: We recommend not staying near the airport as it is a bit far from town.

Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues Geneva: $$$$

Another gorgeous (yet pricey) option. This iconic 5-star hotel has top-notch accommodations, Michelin-starred dining, and a prime location on the shores of Lake Geneva.

Hôtel d’Allèves: $$$

This is a good mid-range hotel. It is entirely renovated and each room is decorated differently.

Hotel N'vY: $$

A trendy boutique hotel with the coolest decor. It has a lively atmosphere and great amenities.

Hotel ibis Geneve Petit Lancy: $

If you’re on a budget, this hotel offers clean, comfortable rooms and basic amenities at an affordable price point.

Best Restaurants In Geneva

Buvette des Bains:

A popular lakeside restaurant offering Swiss cuisine. If you’re looking for something casual with beautiful views, this place is great.

HOT TIP: They only accept cash so make sure you’ve got your Swiss francs with you!

Domaine de Châteauvieux:

A Michelin-starred fine-dining restaurant located in a charming hotel in Geneva’s wine growing region.

Restaurant Bayview by Michael Roth:

Another Michelin-star restaurant located in the Hotel President Wilson. The amazing food is by French chef, Michael Roth (hence the name). It has a sleek, modern vibe with incredible views of Lake Geneva.

Just a note: The restaurant closes for a summer break in August and a winter break in January.

Things To Do In Geneva

SHOPPING

Rue du Rhône:

If you’re about that high-end shopping life, this is where it’s at. Here you’ll find designer brands like Chanel, Dior, and Louis Vuitton.

Old Town:

This is where the cute antique shops, art galleries, and artisanal stores are.

Plainpalais Flea Market:

One of Switzerland’s largest flea markets. You can find everything from vintage clothing to handmade jewelry.

SIGHTSEEING/ACTIVITIES

The Jet d'Eau:

One of the most famous landmarks in Geneva. It’s a huge water fountain that sprays water up to 140 meters in the air. It’s a stunning sight to see and provides the perfect backdrop for a photo opportunity.

Boat tour of Lake Geneva:

Take in the views of the surrounding mountains and the Jet d’Eau from the water.

Explore Old Town:

Winding cobblestone streets, charming cafes, and historic buildings dating back to the medieval era. Make sure to stop by the Place du Bourg-de-Four, one of the oldest squares in Geneva.

St. Pierre's Cathedral:

Located in the Old Town. Climb the tower for the best view of the city!

Go skiing in the nearby Alps:

Geneva is a great base for exploring some of the best ski resorts in Europe, such as Chamonix (France) and Verbier.

Explore the Botanical Gardens:

These gardens are home to over 16,000 plant species and are a peaceful oasis in the heart of the city.

Take a cable car up to Mont Salève:

This mountain is technically in France, but gives breathtaking views of Geneva and the surrounding area. It  is a popular spot for hiking and paragliding.

To get there, you will take the bus from the city center and get off at Veyrier-Ecole, Veyrier-Douane, Croix-de-Rozon douane. They you’ll walk to valley station and take the cable car up to Mont Salève!

Hot tip: Don’t forget to take your passport with you in case they decide to check it at border patrol!

The Palace of Nations:

This impressive building is home to the United Nations Office in Geneva and offers guided tours.

The Red Cross Museum:

Learn about the history and mission of the International Red Cross at this informative museum.

The Museum of Art and History:

The largest art museum in Geneva. It houses a vast collection of art and artifacts from ancient times to the present day.

The Patek Philippe Museum:

A must-visit for watch enthusiasts! It tells the story of Patek Philippe and Swiss watchmaking from the 16th century to now.

The Ariana Museum:

This museum exhibits a collection of ceramics and glass and it is the only museum in Switzerland that is devoted entirely to kilncraft.

Hidden Gems In Geneva

Carouge:

A charming Sardinian neighborhood located just south of the city center. It has a bohemian vibe and is known for its colorful houses, artistic flair, and vibrant nightlife. You can explore the streets lined with boutique shops and artisanal workshops, and don’t miss the Carouge Market on Wednesdays and Saturdays!

Bains des Pâquis:

This is where locals go to relax and enjoy a sunny afternoon. It’s an outdoor bath where you can swim and/or get a massage. There’s also a sauna, a snack bar, yoga classes, and other water activities.

The Quartier des Grottes:

A neighborhood located near the train station. It’s known for its street art, multicultural cuisine, and community events. There’s also a housing complex called The Schtroumpfs Buildings (aka The Smurfs Buildings) that was inspired by the Spanish artist Gaudi, with whimsical buildings and no straight lines!

Eaux-Vives neighborhood:

Calling all architecture fans! This historic area is home to some of Geneva’s most impressive buildings, including the Château de la Tour-de-l’Île (aka Tower on the Island) and the Russian Orthodox Church. Take a stroll through the streets and admire the beautiful facades and intricate details of these stunning structures.

How expensive is Geneva?

Geneva, Switzerland is known for its luxury lifestyle and high cost of living. Prices for food, accommodation, and entertainment can be quite steep, especially in popular tourist areas. Just be mindful and budget carefully to avoid overspending!

When is the best time to visit Geneva?

It really just depends on what you’re looking for.

Summer (June-August) – This is the most popular time to visit as the weather is warm and sunny, and the city comes alive with events and festivals. It is also the peak tourist season, so expect higher prices and larger crowds.

Spring (April-May) and Fall (September-October) – Milder weather, fewer crowds, and lower prices.

Winter (December-February) – This is the least popular time to visit due to colder temperatures and less daylight, but the prices are typically lower and you are able to experience the city’s winter activities such as skiing (at nearby ski resorts) and ice skating.
