Basel is one of the coolest cities in Switzerland, however it often gets overlooked by visitors. It is the third largest city in Switzerland, after Zürich and Geneva. This awesome city is located on the Rhine River in northern Switzerland and borders Germany and France. The city is filled with museums (the art scene is huge in Basel), culture, and a mix of amazing old and new architecture. (Seriously, the architecture is to die for!) We have put together a complete Basel travel guide with everything you need to know, including the best places to stay and eat, and things to see and do!

Getting to Basel

By air:

Zürich Airport (ZRH): If you are flying in from abroad, it is likely that you will be landing at Zürich Airport. From there, you can take the train to Basel, via Zürich HB (main station). This is a common connection and the ride takes just a little over an hour.

EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg (BSL/MLH/EAP): This local airport is also an option. It is unique, because it straddles the border of Switzerland, France, and Germany. It does have international flights, so you might be able to fly directly there, which is ideal. From there, you can take a shuttle or bus to Basel.

By train:

You can get to Basel from pretty much any major city via train.

Check the train schedules here.

By car:

If you are renting a car, you can get to Basel easily. There are parking areas and street parking, but be careful and make sure you read the signs, as there might be parking fees and restrictions!

Getting Around Basel

Walking:

Basel’s city center is pretty compact and pedestrian-friendly. Many of the attractions, shops, and restaurants are within walking distance of each other.

Trams & Buses:

Basel has excellent public transportation. You’ll probably notice the yellow and green trams all over the city – you can’t miss them! The tram network covers the entire city and its suburbs. Trams are a popular mode of transportation, with frequent services that run from early morning until late at night.

In addition to trams, buses are available for transportation within Basel and to nearby regions. They complement the tram network and cover areas that may not be directly accessible by tram.

HOT TIP: The public transport system in Basel is referred to as BVB. We recommend downloading the BVB app to easily check timetables, get tickets, and plan where you need to go!

Ferries:

The Rhine River flows through Basel, and you can take one of the four ferries to cross the river! It’s actually pretty cool – the ferries are attached to a long wire cable and and driven only by the current of the river. This is definitely a fun way to cross the shore!

Bicycles:

Basel is a very bicycle-friendly city with dedicated bike lanes and rental services. A lot of the locals use bikes as their main method of transportation around the city. You’re welcome to rent a bike to explore the city at your own pace. Many hotels also provide bicycles for their guests.

Car:

If arriving by car, you will not necessarily need it, unless you plan to explore the surrounding region and prefer the convenience of having your own vehicle.

As far as exploring the city itself, we recommend leaving your car parked and using the other means of transportation.

HOT TIP: Most accommodations in Basel provide guests with a Basel Card, which offers free use of public transportation during your stay in the city. There are a bunch of other perks as well, such as discounts on museums and other activities!

Make sure you download the BaselCard App when you check in to your hotel and load your card – this will give you easy access to everything!

Best Areas To Stay In Basel

Old Town (Altstadt):

The heart of Basel, Old Town (Altstadt), is a charming and historic area with cobblestone streets and medieval buildings. We love this area because you are within walking distance of major attractions and surrounded by cozy cafés, cute boutiques, and local restaurants!

The old town consists of 2 distinct sections that are separated by the Rhine River:

Kleinbasel:

Located on the right bank of the Rhine (the north side). This is the Rhine port and industrial area and is a good spot if you’re into a lively nightlife. This district is known for its artistic and creative scene, with numerous galleries, theaters, and cultural events.
