One of the best things about Switzerland is their public transportation. Especially the train system. Switzerland has one of the most elaborate and best railway systems in the entire world. Odds are, if you are not renting a car on your visit, you will get to experience a ride on one of their amazing trains! In this guide, we’ll tell you about the two main ways to get around Switzerland so you know what to expect and can plan accordingly!

We’ll start with the obvious one: Swiss Railway is one of the most popular ways to get around Switzerland. It is a reliable, efficient, and comfortable mode of transportation that connects all major cities and towns in the country. With over 12,000 trains running daily, the Swiss Railway is one of the busiest rail networks in Europe. It is also a great way to see the scenic beauty of Switzerland as many train routes offer breathtaking views of the Alps and other natural beauty.
HOT TIP: Depending on your travel plans, you might want to consider getting the Swiss Travel Pass. It provides unlimited access to the trains, buses, and boats throughout Switzerland. You also get free public transportation in certain cities and discounts on cable cars, mountain railways, and a bunch of other perks!
If you prefer to explore Switzerland at your own pace, renting a car is a great option. We’ve done this a few times and it worked out well. Since Switzerland is such a small country, you are able to see a lot by driving. The longest we spent in the car was about 5 hours at a time. Switzerland has an excellent network of roads and highways, making it very easy to travel from one place to another. With a car rental, you can visit places that are not accessible by public transportation, and you can also stop whenever you want to take pictures or enjoy the scenery.
Although getting around Switzerland by car can offer flexibility and convenience, be aware that there are certain towns that are car-free, such as Zermatt and Mürren. This just means that you will have to leave your car somewhere (there is usually a place outside of the village, like a train station) and take a bus or train to your destination.
Once you get to your main destination/city, you will have access to public transportation within that area. Switzerland has an great network of buses and trams that connect all major cities and towns. This mode of transportation is affordable and convenient, and it is a great way to get around the city if you don’t feel like walking. Buses and trams are also eco-friendly, so if you’re environmentally conscious, this will be an extra perk!
